Outgoing Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Gregory Jaczko has voted against NRC staff’s proposal to renew Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station’s license.
R. W. Borchardt, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Executive Director of Operations, had submitted a memo last month asking that the power plant be granted its license.
In his response, Jaczko noted several matters were still pending before the board, noting “the current approach that my colleagues on the Commission support is unprecedented in license renewal proceedings.”
The vote of the other commissioners is pending, but Business Week reports the NRC will grant the renewal.

Workers at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station were awarded a 2011 Top Industry Practice award by the Nuclear Energy Institute for creating a screw bit that, as Power Engineering Magazine explains, helps prevent electrical short circuits.
According to a press release from Entergy, a metal screwdriver bit can inadvertently short-out the adjacent terminal screw, causing an unexpected half-scram. Workers at Pilgrim created, entirely in-house, a non-conductive screw bit which makes it easier to work with sensitive electrical equipment.
Staff at the plant believe their invention will improve both workplace and nuclear safety. “This is a great addition to our tool chest. The team worked together from the research and production of the bit in the Pilgrim shop to testing it in the plant, Bruno Giorgio, team lead and nuclear control technician, said.

Town health officials think they have a lead on where the Manomet mystery smell is coming from.
According to Administrative Assistant Lyn Scolamiero, samples have been taken from the White Horse Beachh area and sent to Envirotech Labs in Sandwich for testing.
At this point, health officials, Scolamiero said, suspect something is leaching from a private home into a public area and saturating seaweed. The seaweed, in turn, has collected in the area. The problem, she noted, may have been going on for years.
“Fortunately, thank God, it’s not a place where anyone goes swimming,” she noted.
Health department staff hope to have the test results back by the end of Thursday.

In response to requests from local officials and activists, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health plans on relocating three radiation monitors set up to track emissions from Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station.
DPH Associate Commissioner Suzanne Condon told the Nuclear Matters Committee the monitors would be placed at Gurnet Point, Colony Place Shopping Center and the Plymouth Waterfront. Condon said Gurnet was chosen because it would allow monitoring of coastal breezes and was close to two other towns, Kingston and Duxbury in the power plant’s evacuation zone. The other two locations were selected because they’re near populated areas.
There are 14 radiation monitors in the area. The three being relocated were all destroyed in car accidents.

Thomas Begley was awarded the fifth annual Peter R. D'Agostino Prize for Excellence in History from Stonehill College for his Senior Thesis Project, "Governor William Bradford: The Pragmatic Leader of Plymouth Colony and His Influence on Relations with the Wampanoag."
Supervised by History Professor Edward McCarron, Begley's thesis examined the policies of Plymouth Colony Governor William Bradford in his dealings with the Wampanoag, and with other local Indian groups, during the more than 30 years he served as governor between the early 1620s and late 1650s.
Begley showed that while Bradford harbored what might be considered typically seventeenth-century European views of the American Indians, he was also able to transcend those views, and to deal with the Wampanoag in a pragmatic manner, in order to secure Plymouth Colony's survival and growth. Bradford's commonsensical approach helped secure decades of peaceful relations between Plymouth Colony and the Wampanoag.
Begley showed the Indians, and the Wampanoag in particular, were historical subjects in their own right, and not simply the objects of European action.
Begley graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history at Stonehill's 61st Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 20.

View Manomet Septic Smell Map in a larger map
This is a map of of of the locations a strong odor has been reported to the Plymouth Health Department.
Town officials are trying to figure out what’s causing the unpleasant smell that people have been reporting all over Manomet.
According to Lyn Scolamiero, administrative assistant in the health department, both Health Agent Holly Ricardo and Director Michelle Roberts were out Monday morning trying to identify the source of the problem. Staff from the public works and environmental management departments have also investigated the matter.
The work has, however, been able to eliminate some suspected sites for the stink.
Finding the cause of the problem has been made difficult, according to Scolamiero, by the fact the reports of the smell have come from all over the village. She reported the smell, “knocked me over,” when she visited two Sundays ago.

A forest fire burns over the Pine Hills Sunday evening.
A brush fire burned about four acres of the Pine Hills, Sunday with the smoke visible from Route 3 and other points in town.
According to Deputy Chief Michael Young, four town brush breakers and four fire vehicles, based in Myles Standish State Forest, from the state Department of Conservation and Recreation were called in to fight the blaze. The first call came in around 6 p.m. and firefighters were on scene until 11:30 p.m.
The cause of the fire is unknown. Young noted it was located in a remote area of woods with no paths into it. The location of the fire was approximately north of Beaver Dam Road, in the vicinity of Craig Street. Fire equipment made its way to the blaze via those roads and from Old Sandwich Road, according to Young. Additional personnel was needed to help drag house to the scene.
Two firefighters, one from Plymouth and one from the DCR were treated for sprains, according to Young. The terrain, he said, was “quite rugged, but the trucks got through and worked.”
